Louboutin Walks into History

By: Victoria Kichuk

His footwear designs are a fashion staple on the red carpet. Her novels are a foundational piece of the American literature canon. Naturally, pairing a historically significant author and a wildly successful modern shoe designer would be something that only happens in Massachusetts. According to the “New York Post”’s infamous “Page Six” gossip page, 89 year-old interior designer Andree Putnam will be overseeing the 2010 Salute to French Design at the Edith Wharton historical house in Lenox, Massachusetts, which will feature an installation by Christian Louboutin.

It was revealed through her daughter, Olivia, as translator, Putnam’s grandmother was the original French translator for Wharton’s The Age of Innocence. The author, who passed away in 1937, contributed in her lifetime such great works as The Buccaneers, The House of Mirth, and Ethan Frome. Her home in Lenox, The Mount Estate and Gardens, will be featuring nine different French designers in total for the project. Louboutin, a personal friend of Putnam’s, will have his installation in, where else, Wharton’s shoe closet. The exhibit will be open to the public beginning in June of 2010, and will explore Wharton’s deep affection for the French aesthetic. Christian Louboutin’s success as a modern designer has made his name nearly synonymous with high fashion shoes, first becoming popular with the help of the “Sex and the City” TV show; his trademark red soles have become iconic in his own time.
