Hollywood East Connections to the Oscars

Saturday, February 27th, 2010

The 82nd Annual Academy Awards will air on ABC on March 7th, and Hollywood East connections are sure to abound the show. Boston boy Matt Damon is nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his role in Invictus. This is his third nomination ever, with both previous being attributed to Good Will Hunting. While he lost for Best Actor in a Leading Role in 1998, he was able to share his win for Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen, with fellow Beantown buddy, Ben Affleck.

By now, its well known that Ms. Streep is no stranger to the nominations category of all the major acting awards, and the Oscars are no exception. Meryl Streep is nominated at this year’s show for Best Actress in a Leading Role for the Boston connected Julie and Julia. This is her 16th Academy Award nomination, including 2 wins. One in 1980 for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Kramer vs. Kramer and one in 1983 in the Best Actress in a Leading Role category for Sophie’s Choice.

Anna Kendrick received her first nomination for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her role in Up in the Air. The up and coming talent, who hails from Portland, Maine originally, also happens to be the second youngest to ever be nominated for a Tony Award.

Golden Globe’s Winners from Hollywood East

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

On Sunday night, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s 67th Golden Globes aired on the tumultuous NBC network featuring stars of both television and film. Though the unusual amount of rain meant the usually glittery red carpet arrivals were somewhat subdued by oversized umbrella accessories, the downpours did little to dampen the festivities indoors. Hollywood East well-represented in the winners’ circle, as stars originally hailing from the area, or simply connected to it through recent projects, took home awards left and right.

On the television side, the inventive Fox musical series “Glee” picked up a Globe on its very first nomination for Best Television Series–Comedy or Musical. The series is helmed by Newton, Massachusetts bred creator, Brad Falchuk.

In movies, double nominee (in the same category no less) and perennial favorite, Meryl Streep, won in the Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture–Comedy or Musical category for her delicious performance as the Boston-based Julia Child in Julie and Julia. Darien, Connecticut born Chloë Sevigny won in the Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television for her role in HBO’s “Big Love”. Sandra Bullock, star of the filmed in Boston flick, The Proposal, and recently named biggest box office star of 2009, continued to do big things in 2010, winning a Globe in the Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture–Drama category, for her role in the Blind Side. The eternally down-to-earth star also made news for donating $1 million for disaster relief in Haiti, a huge gesture that will truly affect the globe.

Holiday Blockbuster Showcases Local Talent

Saturday, December 26th, 2009

Universal’s It’s Complicated opened in the wake of Santa’s sleigh yesterday, providing post-present entertainment for moviegoers burnt out on Christmas classics.

From the writer/director of Something’s Gotta Give, Nancy Meyers, the romantic comedy stars Salisbury, CT transplant Meryl Streep and Newton, MA native John Krasinski, best known for his role as Jim Halpert in NBC’s “The Office.” Streep has been nominated for a Golden Globe Award in the category of Best Actress for her work in the film; It’s Complicated has also won the National Board of Review Award for Best Cast. Way to go, Hollywood East!

Meyers’ movie tells the tale of a divorced-for-a-decade couple–Jane (Streep) and Jake (Alec Baldwin)–who reunite at their son’s college graduation. A passionate love affair ensues, complicated by Jake’s remarriage to a much younger woman, and Jane’s fling with Adam (Steve Martin), the architect remodeling her kitchen. Can the exes make it work a second time around?

With 2010 just days away, new (or renewed!) love could be in store for you, too. Watch the trailer below for some tips from the pros. Or in the very least, catch a glimpse of your next date movie.

Boston Society of Film Critics’ Picks and Golden Globe Nominations

Saturday, December 19th, 2009

The Boston Society of Film Critics recently picked its favorites in the past year’s cinematography, and its list includes well-known favorites as well as hidden gems. For her role as the iconic TV cooking show host in Julie and Julia, Meryl Streep was named best actress, and Stanley Tucci was runner up in the supporting category for his role in that film as well. The Hurt Locker, an independent modern war drama, was named the year’s best film.

Founded in 1981, the Boston Society of Film Critics was started to help give voice to “Boston’s unique critical perspective” on both a national and international level. Each year they recognize both national and local film endeavors, as well as theaters and film societies. Past winners include Mystic River, Schindler’s List, and The Silence of the Lambs. This year’s awards will be handed out at a local ceremony, date to be determined, in early 2010.

The Golden Globe nominations were announced on Tuesday and there’s a host of Massachusetts connections amongst many of the nominees. Meryl Streep (what a surprise) was nominated for playing Boston-based author and cook Julia Child in the true story, Julie and Julia, which likewise was nominated for a Best Motion Picture–Musical or Comedy award. Joining Streep in the Best Actress category is Sandra Bullock for her role in The Proposal, which was filmed in and around the Boston area. In the Best Actor (Comedy or Musical) category, Boston’s own Matt Damon is nominated for his role in The Informant!, as well as in the Supporting Actor category for his role in Invictus. On the TV side of things, “The Office” was nominated for a Best Comedy or Musical Television Series award. The quirky show features Concord, MA’s Steve Carell, who was also nominated for a Best Actor award.

Julia Child’s Boston Connection

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

The latest Nora Ephron-directed flick, Julie & Julia, starring the always winning Meryl Streep and the cute-as-a-button Amy Adams, in the multiple true stories of Julia Child, the famous chef, and a secretary temp who turns her life around by blogging her way through Child’s 734 page Mastering the Art of French Cooking. In its first weekend, the Sony Pictures release took in over $20 million, coming in second in box office totals to the new GI Joe movie.

Though the film was not made in Massachusetts, nor were any of its stars from the New England area (that we know of), there is a distinct Boston connection within the subject matter. It seems that in the 1950s, Julia Child first moved to Cambridge, MA, with her husband, Paul Cushing Child, where the couple began testing French recipes, that Julia would later translate into practical, easy to follow forms. Later, these recipes were compiled into book form, where it was pitched to Boston-based publisher Houghton Mifflin, where it was rejected. When the book was finally published by Aflred K. Knopf in 1961, Child then became a regular columnist for the Boston Globe newspaper.

The following year, Child appeared on a book review program on the Boston channel WGBH, where she demonstrated how to cook an omelette. Her immensely successful show, “The French Chef” debuted shortly afterwards to rave reviews, and ran for ten years. Later in her career, Julia Child’s home kitchen in Cambridge was made into a fully operational television set, where many of her TV specials and regular shows were filmed. Take a tour past 103 Irving Street in Cambridge, and you can see the very place that Julia Child called home for over 40 years.
