Part-time Marshfield resident Steve Carell might be spending his summer working in the quaint New England town, but it won’t be at his general store.

Last week, the Patriot Ledger reported that the former “The Office” funnyman is set to star in the upcoming “dysfunctional family dramedy” The Way, Way, Back, which will be filming in the Bay State this summer. Rumor has is that at least a portion of the flick will be shot in Marshfield, where Carell purchased his general store just a few short years ago.

The indie flick was penned by Jim Rash and Nat Faxon, who won an Oscar last year for The Descendants, and will reunite Carell with his Little Miss Sunshine co-star Toni Collette. The film also co-stars Allison Janney, Sam Rockwell, and Annasophia Robb, who most recently made headlines for landing the plum role of the young Carrie Bradshaw in the upcoming CW series, “The Carrie Diaries.” The film follows the story of a teenage boy trying to enjoy his summer vacation while dealing with a cold mother (Collette) and an adulterous father (Carell). This will be Rash’s and Faxon’s directorial debut.

Carell already has two movies opening later this year. This June, he’ll share the screen with pretty Brit Keira Knightley in Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, in the tale of a man who sets on an adventure to find his long lost love as an asteroid threatens to end the world. Hope Springs, which is due out in August, finds Carell playing a marriage counselor to Oscar-winner Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones. He’ll have five films that come to the big screen in 2012, including the expected release of The Way, Way, Back. Also, he’ll be reprising his role as the slow-witted Brick Tamland, in the recently announced sequel, Anchorman 2, coming to theaters some time in 2014.

Carell, who was born in Concord and grew up in Acton, married Cohasset actress Nancy Walls in 1995, and together they have two children. He purchased the Marshfield General Store in 2008 as a way to preserve the historic building and business, and has remained involved with it’s upkeep.
