Earlier this month, cameras began rolling in Berlin, Connecticut on the Opponent, featuring actors Roddy Piper (“The Outer Limits”, “Walker, Texas Ranger”) and Jeremy London (“7th Heaven”, “Party of Five”). The action/sci-fi flick, written by Waterbury, CT native John Doolan, will be part of 4 new films to be produced by Synthetic Cinema International in the Constitution State over the next 18 months. The fantastical story follows the havoc that ensues in a small town when aliens crash-land inside a barn at a local junkyard, the owner of which offers a cash reward to whomever can successfully fight off the out-of-this-world beings. The resulting chaos means crazies from all over assemble in the junkyard, creating a mini war zone.
Filming officially commenced on July 7th, at Paldolfe’s Auto Parts scrap yard in Berlin, and will take place at other locations around town over the next few months, as well as in nearby Rocky Hill, at the Foundry Property, and Wethersfield, at the Makris Diner. The film is being directed by Colin Theys of Danbury, CT, who has previously worked in digital effects and animation. The film is scheduled to be released in 2010.
