Science in the Theatre at Coolidge

Posted on 19 Oct 2009 at 4:00am

Since its beginning film has in one way or other managed to bring to light almost every discipline and practice that we have studied in academia. Beginning on Monday, October 19th, the Coolidge Corner Theatre will revive its Science on Screen series, a collection of feature films or documentaries that have a theme or are based in science. Each film is paired with introductions by notable scientific figures such as professors, doctors, researchers, etc. The films screen once a month and are co-presented by the Museum of Science in Boston and the New Scientist magazine.

This coming Monday, the Coolidge Theatre will be screening the 1941 film Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, starring Spencer Tracy, Lana Turner, and Ingrid Bergman and based on the Victorian novella by Robert Louis Stevenson. The introductory guests of the evening will be Anne Harrington, the chair of the Department of the History of Science at Harvard University, as well as John Durant, the director of the MIT Museum and a professor in the Science, Technology and Society Program at MIT. Prior to the film, the speakers will be addressing some of the scientific theories and debates of Stevenson’s period (including some of the newest theories such as the speculation of a double brain and questions about dual personalities and mental illness) and how they could have affected the infamously divided character of Dr. Jekyll/ Mr. Hyde.

The film will begin at 7:00 pm on Monday, October 19th at the Coolidge Corner Theatre. Regular admission tickets for the Science on Screen programs are $9.75 with a special price of $7.75 for students and members of the Museum of Science. Members of the Coolidge Corner Theatre get in for free. Tickets are available online at the Coolidge Corner website or at the theatre box office located at 290 Harvard Street in Brookline. Upcoming films in the Science on Screen series include Babette’s Feast with professor Guy Crosby on November 16th, American Beauty with Daniel Gilbert on December 7th, and Wild Child on January 18th.
