With a degree in Physics from Bates College in Maine and having spent several years attending the Berklee College of Music, Massachusetts born actor, Karl Steudel, certainly doesn’t have your typical acting resume. With experience in mechanical engineering, national commercials, equity stages, soap operas, teaching the saxophone, composing music for shows on the Discovery Channel and the “Oprah Winfrey Show,” Steudel’s talents seem endless.
HEC hooked up with Steudel via cell phone from his LA apartment to talk about his latest venture, New England Actors Network, one of the newest networks to hit Hollywood East. Loaded with industry resources for actors, Steudel offers acting advice and workshops where he brings LA and NY casting directors to the Boston area. After many trips to NY and LA, Steudel realized how important it was to bring these agents and casting directors to Boston at affordable and convenient venues. On May 22nd, Steudel has arranged for the famed NY casting Associate, Toby Guidry, currently casting for the upcoming and long-awaited film, The Hobbit (Part 1), to give professional New England actors information about the casting process in LA for feature films. Guidry has also done casting for directors, Robert Zemeckis, and Steven Spielberg. “The mission of New England Actors Network is to provide the ‘who and what’ to make Boston actor’s lives easier, and to make Boston an even stronger, professional place for actors,” Steudel tells us. “I like Toby because he is so generous with his time and information.”
Steudel is currently in LA wrapping up the last weekend of his latest stage credit in Langston & Nicolas at the Stella Adler Theatre, where he has been playing nine different characters every show, which doesn’t sound so far fetched from his bicoastal lifestyle, finding work throughout Boston, NYC and LA. Steudel’s full-time acting career began 10 years ago, but it was only months ago when he accomplished yet another goal — finding an agent. “Everything big and beautiful out here in LA is mostly because of my east coast connections,” Steudel told us. He admits it’s tough to get work out in LA if you don’t know anybody. “In Boston there are only a few casting directors to have relations with but in LA there are over 300 casting directors”.
Steudel will be hosting his own acting workshop on May 24th, where he’ll be sharing his wealth of experience in the business and tell participants how to get gigs not only New England but NY and LA too. It’s a good way to get into the Hollywood East scene and find out if this is something you want to pursue. Space is limited in both workshops so don’t wait to register. Check out New England Actors Network for more information about both workshops and more about the talented Karl Steudel.
